Kunstenaar Gilbert Stuart

"Gilbert Stuart was born in 1755 in North Kingston, United States, and was a highly successful portrait painter of his time. He moved at a young age to London to become a pupil of Benjamin West and he soon acquired a significant reputation as an excellent portraitist. However, he also acquired expensive tastes and tumbled into financial difficulties, which necessitated his move to Dublin in 1787. In 1793, Stuart returned to the United States and was able to consolidate his position. Amongst the great works he painted were portraits of Madame Richard Yates and, his masterpiece, a portrait of George Washington, from which so many engravings were taken that Stuart was able to clear his financial position. Gilbert Stuart died in Boston in 1828."
