Kunstenaar James Hayllar

"The painter of genre scenes, portraits and landscapes, James Hayllar, was born in Chichester in 1829. He settled in London in 1848, where he studied art at the Royal Academy Schools. His subsequent paintings were influenced by a lengthy visit he made to Italy with Frederick Leighton, later Lord Leightton, between 1851 and 1853 and his work was exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1851, though he preferred to exhibit at Suffolk Street. He painted some portraits in the pre-Raphaelite manner and later turned to more historical works, but the subjects of his which survive and are well known in the 21st century are principally his genre scenes, some of which feature appealing children and young couples. He had nine children himself and, by all accounts, his family life, initially in Suffolk and later in Wallingford, was exceptionally happy. James Hayllar died in 1920."
