"First of all a student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Lincoln, then of C. Verat at l'Académie d'Anvers, this Victorian artist first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1887 and continued to take part in their exhibitions after that.Between 1883 and 1898 he was a Member of the Newlyn School in Cornwall with Stanhope Forbes, Bramley and their followers. His pictures show their influence in the way of social realism and ""plein-air"" painting.Hall also catered for the popular taste for pictures that tell a story. A popular sideline of this artist was his caricature drawings, and it is the very variety of his work that causes difficulty in pigeon-holing him.Stanhope Forbes described Hall as ""something of a mystery"". Using the combination of line and content necessary to caricature and colour and technique involved in impressionism, Fred Hall achieved a remarkable effect."
