Kunstenaar Jeremy Farmer
"Jeremy Farmer was born in the United Kingdom in 1950 and spent his childhood in a number of different locations, including Dorset, London and Copenhagen, as his father was in the Royal Air Force. He is a self-taught artist, who developed a passion for art early when selected to exhibit at his school’s Centenary as a representative of his decade. However, there is a strong artistic side to his family: his mother was a well-established stage actress before the war, his grandmother was a stage dress designer who reputedly designed costumes for Lily Langtry, and his sister is now a bespoke clothes designer.Jeremy Farmer paints predominantly landscapes using oil, acrylic gouache, pastels and monoprint inks. In particular, he is known for his landscapes and seascapes of Cornwall and the South of France. He comments: “My love of the North Cornish coastline has grown over the years and has inspired some of my most successful work. The space, the light, the Atlantic and the vast beaches at low tide are elements that feature strongly. In contrast the South of France, with its wonderful light, rich colours and textures, offers a strikingly different backdrop. Here I try to capture the heat and dreamy lifestyle.”As an artist, he believes that he has been most strongly influenced by David Hockney and Edward Hopper, but he also admires the work of Matisse and John Miller, the Cornish artist. He describes his work as “manipulating the light and special form to project a strong sense of place and time”. He adds: “The comparative simplicity of some of my work belies a careful process of refinement and selection. What I leave out is as important as what I put in. It is this economy that creates a sense of stillness and tranquillity.”Jeremy Farmer has exhibited his work at a number of prestigious galleries in London and Cornwall. He is married with two children and lives in West London and, away from his easel, enjoys films, ski-ing, travel, architecture and the countryside of Cornwall."
