Kunstenaar Karen Smeatham
"Karen Smeatham was born in 1968 and was brought up on the outskirts of Glasgow until the age of 8. She then moved to a little village in the heart of Cheshire, where access to the countryside was just at the end of the road. It was here that her early love of nature formed and grew. Her father was artistic and looking at his drawings and illustrations fuelled Karen Smeatham's own desire to paint. Living in the countryside was a definite influence on her and she has always been fascinated by landscape, flora and fauna.Art is her second career she was a Registered General Nurse for 12 years, during which time she painted and drew only recreationally. After the birth of her second child, she took the opportunity to undertake a night class in painting at a local college and this led in turn to an ""O"" Level in Pottery and then an Access to Art course. She graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Art & Design from Liverpool John Moores University via Stockport College. When creating her work, Karen Smeatham is often drawn towards written and printed material such as old letters, stamps, fabric, documents or labels. She is also particularly drawn to nature as an inspiration, since it has so much to offer in respect of colour, texture and form. She describes her work as ""aesthetic and harmonious, often organic in imagery and in the process used to create it"". She tends to use a mixed media approach, which may incorporate found objects laid down as a surface on which to paint, or collaged into the piece. She often uses watercolour, acrylics and pastels, and may use more unusual media found around the house or DIY store. She sometimes also incorporates transfer printing methods, hand or machine stitch or textiles.Describing herself as a freelance artist and designer, Karen Smeatham now exhibits her work around the world. Away from her painting, she loves listening to and creating music, outdoors activities and her young family."
