"Michael Broadbent MW is one of the world’s leading wine experts. As auctioneer and wine critic, his influence in establishing today’s modern international wine market is widely recognised. His career has spanned over 50 years and his authority on fine wine, his legendary tasting notes and his enthusiasm for the subject have made him enduringly popular.Michael Broadbent was born in Yorkshire, in 1927. He initially trained as an architect but at the age of 25, he changed career and entered the wine trade. In 1960, he qualified as a Master of Wine (MW). During the nineteen sixties, he became Senior Director of the wine department of Christie’s, London and through his drive and enthusiasm he expanded and strengthened Christie’s position in the international wine market by searching out some of the best collections of the world’s finest wines. He now acts as a Senior Consultant for the auction house and his Master Classes are still very popular amongst enthusiasts.His pre-eminence as a wine expert was confirmed in 1979 when he was appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite by the French government he is one of only a handful of wine people ever to have received it. Since 1986, he has been President of the International Wine and Food Society and an honorary member of the Académie du Vin de Bordeaux. More recently, in 2006 Michael Broadbent served as a judge in “The Tasting that Changed the Wine World: 'The Judgment of Paris' 30th Anniversary”, a rematch of the historic wine tasting event, where French wine experts blind tasted both red and white wines. Michael Broadbent’s expertise has led him to write several books on the subject of wine and he regularly contributes to several prestigious wine magazines, including Decanter.Sketching is one of Michael Broadbent's passions and his unique style of drawing combines his love of wine with his early architectural training landscapes and perspectives are executed with skill and flair. His pen and ink drawings make up composite pictures, detailing the many wine regions he has visited. The overall effect is unique and each image is suffused with the charm and knowledge for which Michael Broadbent is renowned.One of Michael Broadbent’s earliest exhibitions was Artists of Chelsea in 1952 and, following that year, he became a founder member of the Wine Trade Art Society, of which he became Chairman in 1969. He has also exhibited at the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. His paintings have been used to illustrate numerous books on the subject of fine wine."
