“I see my photographs as a journal. Even though I use large format cameras, I photograph for the moment. I rarely plan a photograph––I just see it.” Residing in Washington state, Micheal Cole has been working as a photographer for over 25 years. He considers photography his true calling and was inspired to pursue this profession by his college education in the sciences and his great love of nature and the outdoors. This self-taught artist shoots only in black and white and hand-prints each image from an original negative onto fiber-based silver gelatin paper. “I print to the eye and this gives each piece individual characteristics.” To limit his work, Micheal stops making photographs from the original negative after five years. “I look for the simplicity of Nature, the fusion of elements, quality of light and the subtle dramas that happen all around us: basic things we take for granted––ice forming on the edge of a leaf or the motion of water changing the pattern of stones in a creek. For over 20 years, I have been expanding my world through photography.”
