Kunstenaar Thomas Rowlandson

"Thomas Rowlandson was one of the finest of the caricaturists and draughtsmen who worked in the 18th and 19th centuries. His work provided biting satire on the society of the time.Rowlandson was born in 1756 in London and was a student at the Royal Academy for two years from the age of fourteen. Then he studied in France for a further two years before returning to the Royal Academy. As a young man he inherited a vast legacy from an aunt, which he proceeded completely to gamble away. With little money left, he changed his style from a painter of serious subjects to a wickedly humorous caricaturist and he was so prolific in his new trade that he was able to pay off his debts. His works were unashamedly popularist but were drawn with a brilliant hand and he died in 1827.He worked with tremendous flowing lines and a subtle depiction of tone which was a mixture of the best of the French and British art scenes."
